What is a Babydoll Sheep?
The Babydoll is a smaller (not miniature), dual-purpose meat and wool sheep based on the heritage British sheep breed called Southdown. BSBA Babydolls can be any colour and pattern. Their Downs-type fleece is springy, around 25-27 micron and short to medium length. The breed is known for its easy going temperament, attractive appearance including woolly head and Babydoll smile, short stature and deep, well-muscled body.
Babydoll sheep are suited to use on small farms, in vineyards and orchards and other places where easy handling sheep are useful. They make great lawnmowers in rural settings. Babydolls are heavier than they look and provide smaller cuts of flavoursome meat suited to home butchering. Their meat yield compared to live weight is impressive.
